A few years ago, in early October, I took a cycle ride westward, in search of a few answers to unanswerable questions. Inspired by Derek Jarman’s Super 8 film from 1971 “Journey to Avebury”, I made my way from a little south of London across the North Wessex Downs to the old stones.
Jarman’s film was originally a silent piece which can be seen here with a COIL soundtrack that was added for a later release. The landscape has changed little in nearly half a century.
People often marvel at the megaliths and wonder why they are there. Coming at them on a bicycle across the undulating landscape from the east, it made perfect sense. It’s as good a place as any.
